This promises to be an interesting and intriguing evening with Thomas taking us on a trip to India by container ship to retrace the steps of a 19th-century missionary, through his talk with slides.

What must it have felt like travelling as an early missionary by boat from your familiar home meadows to unknown foreign fields?  Were did they go and are they still remembered over a century on? Why not come along and find out how this fascinating journey evolved.

The talk takes place:

Saturday 5th April 2014
7.30pm
at St Michael’s Church Centre,
Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL

£2.50 admission at the door

There will be light refreshments and a raffle.

An Entertaining Evening of Tall Tales

By Members of Speak Easy at Martlesham

Tuesday 19th November 2013

At St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath on the evening of 19th November 2013 the audience enjoyed an interesting and entertaining evening of imaginative tall tales told by members of Speak Easy at Martlesham Speakers’ Club. A princess in a pumpkin in Rushmere, holidays drifting on the ocean’s current with only flotsam and jetsam for company, an iced bun grabbing grandmother, an upset camel, meeting the Queen and the Beast of Martlesham, along with many others, made for some fascinating tales to intrigue the audience. When Brian, the compere, asked  which tales were based on fact and which on fiction at the end of the evening, the audience were rarely unanimous in their decision, providing a humorous conclusion!

The Roger David Burrows Music Fund invited members of Speak Easy to provide the tall tales and would like to say thank you to all the members who supported the Music Fund by taking part as well as a thank you to all who attended and helped with the evening.

Many of you may not know about the Roger David Burrows Music Fund, which is now a recently set up charity trust.

We have set up the music fund in memory of Roger starting with the money that he left. With this fund we hope to inspire all abilities, adults and children, in music making by offering small grants to groups or individuals.

Roger started to play the violin at the age of six when he was at Primary School. He went on to play the violin in school groups and in the South Suffolk Youth Orchestra.

Over the years he has helped adults and children. While still at school he helped at a music group in Woodbridge and volunteered with Out and About (a local organisation that helps children with disabilities).

He worked for several years as a carer with a local housing association looking after adults with learning difficulties but after developing epilepsy he went to work with his uncle and mother at Home Meadows Nursery Ltd where his interest in plants developed.

During all of this time he played and took part in many concerts and events arranged by his family for charities both playing violin and singing. He was also a member of Hollesley Church Choir for several years.

For over ten years he had been playing the violin with the Melton Folk group and was in his element when performing at their many events during those years, which included Burns Nights, fetes, garden parties, barn dances and concerts.
